What do you do when…

you can’t sleep?

Just to clarify, I’m not asking for tips on how to get to sleep.  My body and I bid farewell to proper sleep over 20 years ago now and we’re fine with that … most of the time.  What I want to know is what do you get up to on those nights when you wake up after an hour of sleep and just know that you aren’t getting back to sleep this side of sunrise?

Normally I wrestle with the duvet for a while and try to force myself back to sleep.  Rarely works.  When I give in and get up I usually sit here and do a bit of browsing, play The Sims 4 for a while, or watch Netflix (really into Dexter on there at the moment).  But this morning I got up and cleaned my kitchen, made a batch of empire biscuits, and a nice big pot of scotch broth for lunch/dinner.

As I stood there chopping veggies at 2 am I wondered what my fellow insomniacs (though I’m more of a semi-somniac to be fair) get up to to pass the time when they can’t sleep.

  1. I have a little portable radio with earbuds, so I don’t wake my partner. There are a lot of interesting programs on through out the night. Sometimes they are just plain boring and they put me to sleep.

      I haven’t bothered with the chat stations/programs but I must admit I try listening to classical music on my radio for a while as that sometimes helps me ease back into a slumber. Sometimes.


      • There are conspiracy stations, jazz stations, classical music, you name it something is bound to put you to sleep.
